Welcome to the TreeHugger site. Here you'll find some general ramblings about my programming experiences in C#, DirectX, XNA, Python, Multimedia Fusion 2 and Construct. I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist having fun. You'll find any games, applications or samples I do on the downloads page. Enjoy!

| Recently, the computer went boom.
Well, not boom, it just simply threw it's toys out of the pram and refused to work again. A lot of work was lost.
Luckily some backups had been made and saved to disc. They were a little old so some of the more recent stuff is still lost but it's better than losing everything.
And the moral of the story is: Make sure you make backups (especially if you're an Indie Dev, as you most probably have the only copy of your work in existence). Doesn't matter what you use, CD, DVD, removable hard-drive, doesn't matter, just make some backups before you lose work too.
| For some of the little projects I had been working on in the past, I had written practically all the code myself. To speed up development time on future projects, I'm looking into different game engines, the first being FlatRedBall. FlatRedBall is initially looking promising as it is written in C# and can be used with both Managed DirectX and XNA. I'll be spending some time investigating what it can do and how it can help my projects. If you are interested in taking a look yourself, the website is www.flatredball.com | |
| New Example - Gun Cartridges | | | |
| I've just added a new MMF2 example called Gun Cartridges. It shows a simple basic way of having cartridges fly out of a gun at different speeds and angles. Just a quick basic example I did for someone on the GameBuilder forums.
Get it from the Downloads page (links on the left).
| Current Projects - Space game and RPG game | | | |
| So basically I've got two projects that I'm looking at currently. Here's the details:
Project 1: 2D Space game This is a small(ish) basic 2D game project written in Construct. The idea for the game is based around Star Trek and Star Wreck using a modified version of the RPG rules for Star Wreck. So you get the basic idea; you control a starship and bridge crew, make captains decisions (both tactical and diplomatic), go on away missions, starship combat, etc., etc. As this is based partially on StarWreck, I'm thinking of having two modes. One which plays like a normal game/rpg (where your characters get better as time goes on and all work together to 'be the best' and save the world) and one which plays in the StarWreck way (where characters are screw-ups, don't really get along and won't necessarily improve). The StarWreck mode is more a 'fun' mode where you can see a bad crew.
Project 2: C# RPG game (Windows 2D using DirectX) A few years ago I made a very small windows forms application in C#. It had an 2D array (about 5x5) containing room data and a couple of buttons. Clicking the buttons would simulate moving around the array and the details of the rooms would be displayed on the form. Every now and then I would go back and add some more RPG elements to it just for fun, a learning experience and to test some programming ideas. It was kind of a programming sandbox for me to play and test things out. Eventually it became quite large with, characters, classes, towns, items, weapons, armour, spells, combat, monsters, bosses, status effects, buffs, quests, shops, experience, levelling and more. A video of it I put on YouTube can be seen here. Since I'd just been adding bits whenever I felt like and there was no structured plan for it, the code (over 20,000 lines of it) is a bit 'spaghetti code', but that was kind of the point. It was just a ready project for testing any new ideas I came up with. Well I've decided it's about time I wrote the game properly, so I'm working on a plan / design and will rewrite it from scratch but with proper planning and a much better user interface. Although currently I'm unsure whether it will still have a Windows Forms UI or whether I'll make the whole UI graphical using DirectX to diplay everything. I'd prefer the DirectX option but we'll see.
I'll post progress reports here and possibly on YouTube.

| Previously I had a number of MMF2 examples on the site. I found a number of them and re-uploaded them. You can now find eleven MMF2 examples in the Downloads section. The little Sample Player application I wrote can also be found there.
I also uploaded my very first MMF2 game called Alien Assault. I started that game in about 2007. I didn't complete it, just made one level and left it in a demo state. Thought I'd put it up there in case anyone fancied a laugh for five minutes.
I'll add more bits and pieces as soon as I can. Cheers

| The Future of 'treehugger.co.nr' (www.treehugger.elementfx.com) | | | |
| Well, i've been away from programming for getting close to a year now due to important real life issues which needed to be dealt with. I'm back now and will be able to spend more time programming and updating the site. So here's the plan:
